A bounce is when a user goes to your website and clicks out before a second interaction with your page. When a user clicks on a link to bring them to another page on your website, this is a second interaction. The percentage of bounces that have happened on your page is called the bounce rate.
So...Why Might Your Bounce Rate Be High?
Too Much Effort and Too Much Information
If your page has forms to fill out or is asking for too much information too quickly, users may not want to stick around to fill it out. Websites should try and establish trust between them and the user before asking for too much personal information.
Slow Page Load Times
One common issue is page loading speed. If your page is taking 4 seconds or more to load, people may start to click off of your landing page. 2 seconds or less is the ideal time for pages to load. Try and avoid too many large images or custom fonts because these can make your website’s loading speeds go up.
Too Many Unwanted Ads
Not all ads will ruin the users’ experience but too many pop-up ads can be overwhelming to users as well as loud auto-playing videos, popups, and unrelated content and they can make users click off of your site. Keep ads to a minimum or keep ads from distracting users from the information on your site.
Wrong Traffic
Having the wrong traffic coming to your site will increase bounce rates as they may not be looking for what is on your website. Look for users who will be interested in what you have to offer and target specific audiences when advertising to ensure they will stay on your page longer.
Poor Landing Page
If your landing page is unappealing, contains spelling errors, confusing messages, or is hard to navigate, you may have high bounce rates. Users judge websites on their design and do not want to stick around on a website they do not trust or want to use. Keep your website minimal and have multiple people try your website out before launching it to ensure it is easy to use.
Not Compatible On Mobile Devices
The usage of mobile devices is constantly increasing and over 50% of global website traffic comes from mobile devices. Mobile landing pages should grab the attention of users and demand action. Bad design, too much content, or slow loading times all can affect the mobile user’s experience. Mobile users take in and interact with information differently and need a landing page that can be easily used on a mobile device. You should create a separate, more tailored page for mobile and desktop to create a more enjoyable experience on each device.
